The story:
I was practicing alone in the chapel at my church building on a Wednesday night, while my son Ethan was at scouts in the other room. I practiced for a good half hour the Piano Guys arrangement of “Oh, Come, Oh Come Emanuel”, a challenging and beautiful piece. After that, I began to start playing some chords softly. I can’t remember how it began. I just know that a chorus melody came out of me. I was excited and hopeful, as it has been years since I have written a song. I stopped and thought for a moment. I distinctly remember hearing the word ‘suicide’ in my head, and I thought about a recent tragic event at BYU. A 19 year old girl jumped in a suicide attempt from the 4th floor of the Tanner building. She died the next day. I thought about the crisis we are having today, especially in our church, of young people taking their lives. Maybe this song could be a help to someone who is struggling and weak. I don’t know a lot about suicide or mental illness, and so sometimes I think ‘How on earth can I write about this? I can’t relate.’ Yet, the spirit can, and I prayed to know what lyrics to compose. It was a humbling process.
The message:
I know that life is beautiful and hard, but it is a gift to us. We get one earthly life, one chance to experience it all. It is a time of trials, testing, and joy. It is a humbling refinement of our souls, preparing us for greater things. Yet, among the joyful moments are very hard, dark days. We must try to have the courage to reach out for help, to allow the Savior to heal us when we are weak and weary, and to stand and live each day to it’s fullness.
Beautiful quotes:
‘Never give up--however deep the wounds of your soul, whatever their source, wherever or whenever they happen, and however short or long they persist, you are not meant to perish spiritually. You are meant to survive spiritually and blossom in your faith and trust in God.
God did not create our spirits to be independent of Him. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through the incalculable gift of His Atonement, not only saves us from death and offers us, through repentance, forgiveness for our sins, but He also stands ready to save us from the sorrows and pains of our wounded souls.
The Savior is our Good Samaritan, sent “to heal the brokenhearted.” He comes to us when others pass us by. With compassion, He places His healing balm on our wounds and binds them up. He carries us. He cares for us. He bids us, “Come unto me … and I shall heal [you].”
“Do you think for a moment that Heavenly Father would have sent one of His children to this earth by accident, without the possibility of a significant work to perform? … Neil L. Andersen
“You were preserved to come to the earth in this time for a special purpose. Not just a few of you, but all of you. There are things for each of you to do that no one else can do as well as you. … If you will let Him, I testify that our Father in Heaven will walk with you through the journey of life and inspire you to know your special purpose here.” Elder H. Burke Peterson
